The Dinokeng Game Reserve, covering 21,000 hectares, is the first free-roaming Big 5 residential game reserve in Gauteng Province – and possibly in the world – situated next to an urbanised area. It is a private/public initiative, officially opened in 2011. The name “Dinokeng” is derived from the Tswana and Bapedi languages, meaning “a place of rivers”.

After an early breakfast at the hotel, prepare for an exciting half-day safari adventure at the only game reserve in Gauteng Province that hosts all members of the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. You will be transferred to a private game lodge where your safari begins. Upon arrival, a professional ranger will welcome you and give a brief orientation before you board a custom-designed open safari vehicle. Embark on a 2-hour guided game drive across the reserve's private land, where you'll have the opportunity to spot the Big Five and other iconic African wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and various antelope species. The experienced guide will share insights about the animals, local flora, and the conservation efforts that protect this unique environment.
